Tape/CD

Blackjack Illuminist Records, home of the ever prolific Vlimmer, have linked up with Sana Obruent for this, the California-based artist’s third and most personal release to date..

August initially appears light and airy but lurking beneath the empyrean waves lies a sense of foreboding, perhaps even dread. Something akin to forcing a smile through swelling tears. Still, it is somehow calming. There is a kindness in this musical serenity. Space for consideration and, a rarity for our modern, hectic existence, extended moments which allow us to drift. No clamouring for attention. No bombarding distractions. Here something comforting and natural lies within the reviving tones that are coerced from guitar and guitar alone. To trek through woodland and emerge atop a flat, grey rock overlooking a tranquil lake is tantamount to being immersed in August. The sun still twinkles off of deft ripples and the breeze nibbles gently on the backs of unscarved necks.

[Chrönique] Vlimmer – IIIIII/IIIIIII – EP – 2017

Blackjack Illuminist Records

Darkgaze/Darkraut/Darkwave/Drone/Ambient

Germany

2017

Since late 2015 Berlin’s Vlimmer has been carving progressive Darkwave EPs out of obsidian post-punk soundscapes. Landing at the same time in a wonderfully packaged boxset are numbers 6 & 7 (of an 18 EP series) and they immediately sink you into the sort of fug that clogs the lacquered floors of Kreuzberg dive bars in the twinkle of the night. Rhythmic thuds that whisper of danger lurch along like hunchbacked opportunists leading you, via a gnarled fist grasping a trembling elbow, through paint-stripped doorways into dripping basements reverberating with faint chain clinks.

On Traumalität we are invited to witness the gradual decline of that which was once sanguine losing itself to despair. The hazy and disembodied voices seeping into lethargic minds, as if sludge decongested from blocked piping, begin to sound borderline exultant before disappearing into an anguished roar.

Similarly, whilst the drums on Rotflimmern (a burning reference to the Reeperbahn perhaps?) are almost funereal in their insistent plod, the soaring synth-gaze which provides a platform for carefully considered vocal melodies has loftier, oneiric ambitions. That is before deep shards of sonorous drone grot is unleashed in the latter stages of the track. The resultant battle between above and below deftly foreshadows an unnerving denouement to part 6. What begins as distant uncertainty is soon side-swept by the most overtly danceable track on either half of this release. Yet, at a testing thirteen minutes long, the intention is still, evidently, to probe, obscure, and subvert.

Part 7 begins with a slower, though no less focused, approach. Elevating the majestic calls to something approaching piousness, Möwenmeer appears to bawl to an ebbing tide in a placid and purposeful ritual that is soon banished by the marauding, frenetic drums of the following track. The theme of light clashing with dark permeates the very fibre of these two records. From unsettling voids, droplets of silver are wrung. A juxtaposition which hardly demands the title – Sonnenschwarz. Ears are whipped with fleeing cacophonous stabs, all the while underpinning vocals that flit from ecclesiastical to maniacal.

Veräußerung, however, provides a moment of Robert Smith adoration, albeit churned through the fetid filter of the likes of Pure Ground or Hørd.

That another 11 of these sonic capsules are planned and in the pipeline is nothing short of intimidating.
