[Chrönique] RID – SukhAshA kAryashAlA – album – 2017

Divergent Series

Sludge metal/industrial/noise/experimental

USA

Tape

This is the sixteenth release in the Divergent Series and the second offering from RID. On Void Expected Workshop we delve into a night of restless sleep. Deep dreams are dipped into but only for the briefest of instances. These worlds which we enter are places of frantic energy, uncertainty and, just as minds begin to comprehend our surroundings, we are unceremoniously ejected from each reverie.

These are abridged occult musical forays that wouldn’t be out of place soundtracking lour rituals in a psychedelic cinematic throwback. Each curt slice gives a passing glimpse into a spiralling narrative that flits from quoting The Bhagavad Gita, forecasting seething static dread, and flooding the senses with punishing cabalistic polyrhythms.

Nine of the thirteen tracks clock in at under two minutes which gives the experience of a type of sonic thali. As soon as one idea is settled upon it is snatched away. On one of the longer cuts RID treats us to an anxiety inducing build up forged from rolling snares and a driving perpetual hum. This, in turn, leads to an overtly rambunctious track na shrAvaka (No Disciple) which provides a welcome and consistent state of looming sludge.

That RID has opted to confound rather than appease with these incisive recordings is testament to the challenging gauntlet being slung down. They often feel, to pick up on the oneiric aspect again, like fading dreams. Trying desperately to cling to the thread of something whilst it slips through spread palms. If these were dreams, however, they would be the uneasy dreams which Kafka wrote of before transformation into monstrous vermin.

[Chrönique] RID – Vulgar Upliftment – Album – 2015

Divergent Series

Sludge metal/industrial/noise/experimental

USA

Tape

RID, the industrial sludge outlet from the mind responsible for FRKSE, is an eastern-tinged yet hoarse-throated maniac. Swaggering about like The Body if Chip regularly inhaled his way through two Clippers a day.

The gutter world of Vulgar Upliftment initially lulls you into a comfortably furnished opium den, strewn with elaborate cushions and silk drapes of dark, intricate hues. This is then immediately stampeded by thick-booted and kevlar-clad Gestapo threatening caning, amputation, and death. The aural equivalent of a blissful ocean of contentment being shattered by a local demolition.

7/0 emerges like a ramshackle deep sea diving excursion in which the participants have no intention of resurfacing and are hazily eager to descend into an emerging nightmare. What sounds like pained, regulated, breaths drown amongst a rambunctious and piercing squall of cymbals and trudging bass. Then we have the second of three interlude type tracks – Burned Plastic Bodies – which seems to be a sonic recreation of a cancerous blue flame forking and wending its way though the inanimate and lost.

Gutter Death, a thematic and auditory sequel of sorts to the first track –Gutter Life – follows riding in upon a sea of static and feedback, ricocheting off one another like a hail of focussed machine-gun fire. This is soon replaced by a weed-baked groove that bolsters all accompanying allusions to savagery. It’s a thick, enveloping swirl that seeps deep into frontal lobes. After this Fine Arts has the feel of a march but where the mood is, paradoxically, sombre and driving. Is this funereal or warmongering? Perhaps neither… Perhaps both as it continues jubilantly nihilistic, like a feverish sprint to a shallow grave.

And, finally, there is Drainage. As if the venue for all of this carnage was being compacted and juiced, only to peel back those heavy third-eye lids and, blinking against the severe light, discover a vibrant and bustling marketplace from out of the narcotic murk.
